Anchor Point, Alaska

Have you ever been to the most westerly point in the US road system that you can drive to ? If not, do you know where it is ? Well, you just have to go there ! It is at the Anchor Point Beach in Anchor Point, Alaska. Just drive the 200 mile scenic route from Anchorage, Alaska, turn right in Anchor Point and head for the beach. When you arrive at the beach, it will take your breath away. There, spread out before you, across Cook Inlet, you will see the beginning of the Ring of Fire, the famous chain of active volcanoes that stretch from near Anchorage out the Aleutian chain for a 1,0000 miles or more. The 10,000 foot volcanoes that can be seen from the Anchor Point Beach are Mt. Spur, Mt Reboubt, Mt Illamna, and then 90 miles southwest sits the volcanic island of Mt St. Augustine and Cape Douglas..

This area was first visited by Captain James Cook in the summer of 1787. He and his crews of the Resolution and Discovery lost a large kedge anchor near the Anchor River area, due to the powerful tidal currents, thus the name of Anchor Point.

During the spring of 1896, gold fever brought many to the beaches of Anchor Point to search for the fine beach gold found there. Anchor Point began to be populated around 1945.
